Saturday, we all returned back to Bogota. We were welcomed by the grey cool that is Bogota. In true Fulbright TGC fashion, we hit the road soon after arriving. We continued our cultural education by visiting the Bogota Gold Museum.
As we walked among ancient treasures, we shared bits and pieces of our experiences at our various in-country schools. Some shared about extreme heat, some challenging accommodations, and some about adjusting to the differences in food. All remarked on how rewarding our experiences were and how we all tried to offer something positive to our very welcoming host communities.
We were treated to a wonderful welcome back dinner where the sharing continued. We were definitely happy to back together again.
On Sunday, we visited the Salt Cathedral in the town of Zipaquira. We found out that this working mine became a tourist attraction to provide income for the town. It featured the 14 stations of the cross, beautiful artwork and chandeliers most of which were hewn out of salt. We were greeted by a beautiful cathedral that still has mass at the end of the tour.
It was amazing!
We then had lunch at a rustic restaurant known for its open grill, and I experienced the warm flavors of ajiaco for the second time! I found both cultural places to be examples of the dedication that I have seen in the people of Colombia to acknowledge history and tradition, hard work, dedication, and the desire to make their lives better.
The afternoon was a much needed time for reflecting, repacking, and resting. Being on the road, though very rewarding, can be very tiring. I was glad to have the time.
